A water droplet cause rainbows to happen by basically light entering the water droplet and then bounces around inside, and then leaves the water droplet. At certain angles relative to the incoming light rays, the light becomes focused this is the rainbow that you see. The difference in the index of refraction of different wavelengths of light causes the slight separation of colors so that you see a rainbow
